In their infographic entitled “The State of BYOD 2013: Devices, Employees, & IT,” Magic reported that 44% of employees in mature market countries like Japan, France, and the United States are participating in BYOD and 75% of employees in high growth countries like India and Brazil are participating in BYOD. Organizations that are looking to improve their use of BYOD should consider the importance of driverless equipment, and BYOD and collaboration so that they can understand why these elements must work properly together.
How Plug And Play Equipment Works
“Plug and play” has been a standard term used in the IT world for many years. It refers to devices that can be set up and made to interface with existing networks and devices very easily. For example, a “plug and play” mouse is one that you can plug in and instantly begin using with your computer. Plug and play equipment is sometimes known as driverless equipment, to separate it from traditional equipment which requires the installation of drivers on the device that the equipment will be used on.

With the trend of BYOD increasing rapidly in all types of workplaces, driverless equipment, and BYOD and collaboration are all beginning to overlap. From a BYOD context, driverless equipment is helpful because it allows a company network to support a larger number of devices that an employee might be using. This will make it easy for a worker to bring any kind of phone or tablet from home into the office, connect it to the company network, and instantly begin getting work done. Plug and play equipment also cuts down on the need for IT departments to spend time installing and updating drivers, which can be a tedious task for organizations with hundreds of computers or other devices.
In a collaborative setting, driverless equipment is helpful because it allows collaboration across several different types of device platforms. Consider the problem faced by a company that is trying to host a conference or video call with an office that is located in a different country with different technology. If the equipment being used in these offices requires certain drivers, it will be extremely difficult to hold the conference call, which puts a damper on collaborative capabilities.

These kinds of policies can be extremely beneficial for businesses and their employees. They reduce the amount of money and time that a business has to spend on new equipment and updating drivers, while allowing workers to be more flexible in the work tools they use and the locations from which they complete their work. As technology in the fields of driverless equipment, and BYOD and collaboration develops, it is doubtless that we will see an increase in the ability of workers to collaborate on important projects, which could lead to an increase in corporate efficiency around the world.
